How to Assemble a Homemade Care Package

There is nothing quite as personal as a homemade care package. A few types of care packages that are easy and fun to assemble are the soldier's care package, the college student's care package or a care package to send to a child at camp or away for the summer.
First: Get your container ready
Cardboard boxes are used for most types of care packages. If you are sending it overseas, make sure it is sturdy enough to make the trip. Also check the restrictions for military care packages and postal regulations for size and weight.
Second: What to send to a soldier
When sending a care package to a soldier, consider what he or she needs. If you do not know the person you are sending the package to, then send things like baby wipes, ChapStick, hand or body lotion, soap, deodorant, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, reading material, games, non-perishable food items and post cards for the soldier to send to friends and family.
Third: What to send to a college student
When sending a care package to college students, food is always welcome -- homemade cookies, microwave popcorn or whatever you know they like. College students love to recieve handwritten notes from members of the family or friends back home. Even better are videos, some non-academic reading material, pens, pencils and even clothing -- especially underwear and socks -- embarrassing, perhaps, but the recipients are also grateful.
Fourth: What to send to a camper
If your child is off at camp for the first time, a care package can certainly help, especially if he or she is a little homesick. Food and candy are a big hit with campers; send enough to share. The campers also like notes or letters from home. How about one from the family pet stating how much he misses the camper, with a paw print for a signature? You could also include a blank stamped postcard addressed to Mom and Dad so you can learn about what your child is doing and how happy he is. Reading material is fine to send; so are games, comics and fun stuff or some suggestions for harmless practical jokes. Campers also enjoy trial-size toiletries, clothes or hats.
